Leathercraft Leather Stamping Tools are intricately designed metal tools designed to speed up your leatherwork and gives it a high-quality professional look. You will be amazed at the fine detail that you can create in your leather designs by using these kinds of stamps. These stamps are great for giving new leathercrafters of any age with a chance to create more intricate and stunning patterns.

Leather Stamping tools are utilized to create creative impressions into your leather designs. Generally the raised look you see is done by pressing down on the particular areas we don’t wish to be raised. To ensure that the impression remains in place, proper moisture content is essential when you’re striking the leather. Leather which is too wet or too dry may cause the impression to rise back up with time.

These tools work by either a single downward action or a double (down up) action with each strike with the mallet. Single action tools are held firmly down so that they cannot bounce back up. They are often leaned right or left, front (towards the toe) or back (towards the heel) that will give just a partial impression.

Double action tools are also known as walking tools. You would hold the tool firmly in your hands but exerting no downward pressure. This will allow the tool to bounce back up from the leather right after striking and creating your impression. You will use the recoil to move the tool down a line unhindered, making a steady continuous impression in the leather.

The Camouflage stamp – The camouflage stamp is a single action tool that is employed to depict a variety of textures to stems, leaves and flowers.

The Pear Shader stamp – The pear shader stamp is a double action tool which is used to depress the leather to produce concave parts.

The Beveler stamp – The beveler is also a double action tool. It is used to give relief to the various objects that are within the pattern.

The Veiner stamp – The veiner is also single action tool and it’s used to provide the effect of veins in leaves.

The Seeder stamp – The seeder is used for making the seed pods of flowers and it is another single action tool.

The Backgrounder stamp The backgrounder may be used as either a single action or as a double action tool on much bigger areas. It’s used to mat down the background area of the pattern.

Geometric stamps – Geometric stamps can be used for a lot of decorative and special effect purposes. By using even one single geometric tool, you are able to cover a considerable area with a nice design in minimal time.

Border Stamps – Border stamps can be used by themselves to create a decorative frame around leatherwork. They’re also used all around basketweave or geometric patterns to fill in any unevenness around the leather project’s border areas.

Figure carving stamps – Leather figure carving stamps were fashioned to help you create leather carvings that illustrate animals, plants and landscapes. Also, a number of these stamps can also be used for border designs, too.

Stop stamps – Stops are mostly used right at the end of swivel knife cuts, on a floral pattern, to enhance its appearance. They are used at the base of flower petals, leaves and lots of other areas to show more definition to your design and also to create special effects.

Flower center stamps You can Create attractive arrangements using the flower and leaf stamps together or apply them on their own to create a decorative floral border.

Leaf Stamps – Use these leaf stamps in combination with the flower center and veiner stamps to make bouquet designs or you may use them by themselves to make a decorative leaf border design.

Article by Mary Dawn A. Tingal

Leatherworking, as a primary profession, compliments skinning very well as it almost exclusively uses the leather obtained from the creatures of the wild. In this leatherworking guide, you will learn how to create cloaks, mail armors, leather, ammo pouches, armor kits, and quivers using the materials you gather in the wild.

{Who Benefits From The Leatherworking Profession}

Leatherworking, while in general benefits all classes and races, is more beneficial to leather armor-wearing classes like the Shamans, the Rogues, the Hunters, and the Druids.

{How to get started in leatherworking}Like a number of other primary professions, Leatherworking doesn’t require crafters to use special locations in the game or special tools to process materials into goods. So long as the pattern is available and that the materials needed by the pattern are present, the Leatherworker can create his desired item.

There is an exemption though for crafters that require the special instrument that is made only by skilled engineers. This instrument is called the Salt Shaker.

Skinning is the top recommended secondary profession for Leatherworkers since they depend almost entirely on the materials gathered by skinners. This allows for free supplies as well as the convenience of not having to depend on the Auction House for materials. If you choose to level up in leatherworking purely via the Auction House, you will have to prepare for the expenses of doing so.

There are also other benefits to pairing leatherworking with skinning; these include.

{Free patterns} – Most professions depend on the Auction House, on other players, and their trainers for recipes. If you’re a leatherworker AND a skinner, you will have the benefit of literally farming the patterns you need. You get free stuff from skinning monsters, mobs, and humanoids.

{Availability of materials} – It isn’t always that the materials you need are available at the Auction House. If you’re getting your materials purely off of the Auction House, you’ll have huge problems with the availability of the items you need. If you’re skinning, though, a few mobs killed can yield the stuff you need.

{What Are The Recommended Classes For Leatherworking}It is sensible for leather armor-wearing classes like Shamans, Rogues, Hunters, and Druids to specialize in Leatherworking. After all, they depend on leather for their armors. It always pays to get the things you need for free.

{Specializing As A Leatherworker}

Leatherworking is one of the select professions that allow for specializations. Once you hit the accumulate the right number of skill points, you can start specializing in any of the three areas of specialization namely the Dragonscale Leatherworking, Tribal Leatherworking, and Elemental Leatherworking. Each of these specializations allow for the creation of special armors sets that are soulbound to their wearers.

{Training For Leatherworking>

A leatherworking guide or trainer is situated in any of the major cities in the game. A trainer is there to walk you through the basics of the profession. Not only that, you also get to increase your rank in the profession for a small charge.

A leatherworking guide, depending on its coverage, will help you learn the ropes of the profession – from start to finish.
If you have found the collection of leatherwork videos helpful and would like to send me a small donation there are details on how you can do so as well as info on the videos here: ianatkinson.net This video shows you the basic tools that I think you need to start leatherwork and make a neat job of it! Some people would argue that you don’t need some of this but if you cut corners you’ll make second rate items in my opinion. Here are the items from the video that you will need (in the UK I recommend you buy from either Le Prevo or The Identity Store): Cutting Tools * Knives * Safety ruler * Non metallic hammer/hide mallet/wooden mallet * Glue (contact adhesive such as Evostick Timebond) * V-gouge * Hole punches (hammer tools not a rotating one unless you’re only using very thin leather) * NOT IN VIDEO — a skiver or safety bevelled for thinning down leather Stitching * Stitch groovers (parallel and freehand) * Overstitch wheels (numbers 5 and 6 should cover most items) * Diamond awl blade and handle * Saddlery needles (sizes 2 and 3) * Thread (either 18/3 linen thread or pre-waxed nylon thread) * Beeswax * Needle nose pliers Edge Finishing * Edge bevellers (sizes 1-3 are most useful, but at least a 3) * Bone folder * Edge slicker * Sandpaper or Dremel Dyes and Finishes * Dye (I recommend Fiebings Professional Oil Dye) * Wool daubers * Carnauba cream * Gum tragacanth * Tan kote * Leather sheen or other finish * NOT IN VIDEO — some neatsfoot oil to replenish dry leather …
